Background
Mago Polytechnic was established in 2005. The school provides vocational training in Motor Vehicle Mechanics, Carpentry & Joinery, Building & Construction and Tailoring & Dress making, Catering & Hospitality Management and Computer skills.
The idea for the school came after 3 gentleman from the Netherlands visited the region Kisumu/Kakamega and noticed that many students could not afford the high school fees normal Polytechnic schools asked, due poverty in their families.
The Polytechnic school in Mago is focusing especially on those students. School fees are much lower then other similar schools and teachers ask for less money then their colleagues as they want to give their knowledge back to the community.
Thanks to the donations of equipment and financial donations from companies and individuals of the Netherlands this project could be realised.
To become economically sustainable the school came up with Mago Guesthouse Project within the school compound.
The guesthouse was established in 2007 and acts as an income generating project to support the school programs but also serves as a trainingcentre for students undertaking the course of Catering and Hospitality Management.
The students with assistance of their teachers prepare the guestrooms, the meals and also serve the guests to gain work experience.
The school started with 30 students but has seen tremendous growth and currently we have over 150 students.
